The Department of Political Science at the University of Zurich (http://www.ipz.uzh.ch) invites applications for a student assistant (20%-40%) in the research group of André Walter, who is an Ambizione Grant Holder. This role supports a research project on the political and economic organization of pre-colonial societies. The aim of the project is to provide an extended and georeferenced version of the «Ethnographic Atlas» by G.P. Murdock, a dataset widely used in the social sciences to study the long-term determinants of economic development, state formation, and democracy.

Your responsibilities

  • Data cleaning (e.g., checking for duplicates and resolving coder disagreements)
  • Georeferencing data based on digitized maps

Your profile

  • Advanced studies (Bachelor or Master) in anthropology, political science, economics, or another relevant field with good or very good grades
  • Proficiency in Excel; familiarity with Large Language Models is a plus
  • Working language is English or German
  • Reliability, flexibility, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Interest in comparative politics

Start of employment
