Summer study abroad and NYC + master’s degrees in international affairs

  • von

The International Field Program (IFP)IFP gives students real world experience abroad at site. For 2023, applicants select one of four sites: Cuba, the Balkans and Eastern Europe, Ethiopia, and Palestine. Students travel to these places with in-country seminars, professional internships, project work, and opportunities for independent research with faculty supervision. Each site varies in its dates and programming, but basically each is 8 weeks and is a wonderful experiential learning opportunity. Apply through IFP website—also see for application deadlines. Deadline for Summer 2023 applications: February 8.

United Nations Summer Study (UNSS)A seven-week deep exploration of the UN system in New York City, featuring a class, colloquia with UN staff and other international affairs professionals, and site visits (mostly briefings at UN Member State missions to the UN). There is an option to participate in a practicum (student team consulting projects with UN agencies or NGOs). Apply through the UNSS website—also see for application deadlines. Deadline for Summer 2023 applications: February 15.

Note we will have an online information session for IFP/UNSS on Wednesday, February 1, 3:00 pm (New York City time). To RSVP and receive the Zoom link, please register at: https://event.newschool.edu/unss-ifp-infosession

Flyer for IFP/UNSS 2023 is attached.

The credits from the above can usually be transferred from The New School to one’s home college/university, or they can be applied towards a master’s degree from SGPIA. In terms of the latter, information is also attached about SGPIA master’s degrees. Our distinctive curriculum is rooted in critical inquiry and a commitment to social justice, and provides robust training to launch a career in international affairs. Based in New York City, SGPIA has many opportunities (practice-based learning, internships, etc.) to engage and get experience with a wide array of inter-governmental organizations (including the United Nations), non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and media. We are currently accepting applications for either Summer 2023 or Fall 2023 start. More information can be found on the SGPIA website and SGPIA blog, and I’d be happy to answer any questions by email (iadirector@newschool.edu) or feel free to set up a Zoom session to discuss.
